Harry Potter Birthday Feast

A few years ago we decided to throw Paige a small Harry Potter Feast for a family birthday dinner we were hosting for her. She was in a truly obsessed Harry Potter mode at the time and wanted a gift that year instead of a party with friends – so we told her we would keep the family dinner party small. My mom and sister helped me run around- making this delightful spread. We shopped the house and yard for items that could work for decor. She had asked for Beef Stew for her dinner- so that went well with the feast idea and all the fruit and veggies and sides and potatoes that we threw on platters to give the look of a delicious feast. I served sparkling cider instead of butter beer because I just didn’t have time to figure out how to put that together. When she walked in the house (as the theme song from the movie played) she was surprised and happy and immediately figured out what we were trying to do with whole Harry Potter thing (that was a relief).

Here is what we did:

We wanted to surprise her and make the dinner table like the feast Harry had when arriving at Hogwarts for the first time. Here was our version of that (including floating candles, fancy dinnerware & silver platters gushing with food and delights. We also added a cage for Hedwig and some other HP treasures.

I set out photo props from HP so she could take some photos.

We made a cake look like the one that Hagrid made for Harry.

We put up a Platform 9 ¾ sign.

We added Moaning Myrtle to the bathroom mirror & MINISTRY OF MAGIC sign to the toilet.

If you are a fellow HP fan you will easily get some of the nods towards that theme. I am not a super fan and had to rely on my sister and limited knowledge of the books/movies (so don’t judge me too harshly if we got a few things wrong- ha ha). All in all it was a magical evening and she was both surprised and delighted!

Bible Verses for Kid’s & Mama’s {and EVERYONE}!

Here are some sweet and wonderful verses for me & my kids about:

who God is,

and how he sees us,

and how he loves us,

and cares for us.

We will try to keep these memorized and close to our hearts for the days that we need to remember who God says we are and who he says he is.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

I can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens me! Philippians 4:13

Paige’s Hot Pretzels

Paige has become a baking queen. She loves making these hot pretzels from scratch.

Initially she learned by using this recipe:

HOT PRETZEL RECIPE

Now she has it memorized and plays around with different shapes and sizes. We keep a jar of yeast in the fridge & sometimes use bread flour. Good quality flaked salt is best for the top. If you want them darker keep them in the oven a minute or two longer. Enjoy!

happy new year & my word for the year…

abide

My word for the year is: abide

Every year I choose a word to focus on. A word that can help keep me focused on one area in my life that I need to grow in. If you are not familiar with what this years word might mean it is simply the idea/encouragement from the Bible to “abide” in Christ. I realize more with each passing year that I need Jesus. I need to remain close to His heart so that I may grow in my love for him and others. Just like any relationship, if you want to be close to someone you must listen, talk, spend time and learn more about them. I’m praying I can do that well this year. I’m praying that I will spend more time reading and studying the Bible, praying, listening and watching others who love Jesus well. Here is a passage that talks about this in God’s word:

John 15 {I Am the True Vine}

15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-dresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

Our holiday season was filled with love, fun, new traditions and old traditions, family time, travels, Disney magic, illness, craziness, snuggles, snow, twinkly lights and the celebration of our ADVENT {the anticipation of the everlasting hope that came through the birth of our sweet Savior Jesus}. The new year was ushered in with complete silence {the entire family was sick and in bed by 7:30 on new years eve}! It was weird but sweet.   10945298_1532857750374834_1961982314_n

Life is a race these days. A breathless race of moving from one thing to the next. A one year old baby is in our midst among vacations, ministry activities, end of the year events, family time, memory verses, road trips, eating out, birthdays, packing & unpacking and the taste of summer always on our tongues. It seems that Winter passed the baton to Spring too early and Summer was in the lead before we knew it.

Sometimes the race feels endless…but summer has been sweet. I have been trying to use my phone less. Use my apps and social media less. Play more. Read more. Walk more. Take in life and enjoy my kids {even when they drive me crazy}!

And Aaron has been great at helping me catch a breath here and there…

I got away yesterday for a pedicure and it may have been the first time in weeks that I was alone for two hours. Wow. It was amazing. I actually read through a magazine & did nothing…my brain did not know how to relax…I did nothing…for an hour…while someone cared for my toes and nobody asked me for help!  It was life giving.

So in this season with three littles at home…in the craziness…and beauty and stress of out little life I must thank my sweet Jesus for it all. We are enjoying the endless race of sweet moments and the life-giving conversations and growth in these little lives all around us…for these sweet kids.
